About ABA therapy
What is ABA therapy?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based therapy that helps children with autism build communication, social, learning, and daily-living skills, and reduce behaviors that get in the way of learning. It breaks skills into small steps and uses positive reinforcement to help children succeed.
Who can benefit from ABA?
ABA is most often used with children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and research shows it's especially effective when started early. It can help children of many ages and ability levels, because every program is built around the individual child.
How many hours of therapy will my child need?
It depends on your child's needs and goals. After the assessment, your BCBA will recommend a number of weekly hours and explain why. Recommendations commonly range from 10 to 40 hours a week, and we work with you to find a schedule that fits your family.
Where do sessions take place?
Most sessions take place in your home, with community outings when they support your child's goals, like practicing at the park, the store, or a restaurant.
How involved will I be?
Very. Parent and caregiver training is a core part of every program. Your BCBA will meet with you regularly to share progress and teach strategies you can use every day.
Getting started
Does my child need an autism diagnosis?
Most insurance plans require a formal autism diagnosis from a qualified provider (such as a developmental pediatrician, psychologist, or neurologist) before they will cover ABA. If you don't have a diagnosis yet, contact us and we can help you understand next steps.
How long does it take to start services?
Timing depends mostly on your insurance authorization. We move quickly on our end, verifying benefits right away and scheduling your assessment as soon as it's approved.
What happens during the assessment?
A BCBA will spend time with your child, observe them during everyday routines, use standardized assessment tools, and talk with you about your goals. They then write a treatment plan, which we review with you before submitting to your insurer.
Insurance and cost
Is ABA therapy covered by insurance?
Many Virginia insurance plans cover ABA therapy for autism, including most commercial plans, Virginia Medicaid, and TRICARE. Coverage varies by plan, so we'll verify your benefits for free before services begin. See the plans we accept.
